Hard drives give warning signs before they fail completely. Recognising them early can save your data.
1. Clicking or Grinding Sounds
Any unusual mechanical noise — especially clicking — means the read/write head may be damaged. Back up immediately and bring it in for diagnosis.
2. Very Slow Performance
If your computer suddenly becomes much slower — especially when opening files — the drive may be struggling with bad sectors.
3. Frequent Crashes or Blue Screens
Random crashes and BSoDs often point to failing storage. Run a SMART test to check drive health.
4. Files Disappearing or Corrupting
Files that become corrupt or vanish without explanation are a serious warning sign of imminent drive failure.
5. Long Boot Times
If your PC takes much longer to start than usual, the drive may be struggling. This is often an early symptom before full failure.
